Hispanic Heritage Month Comes to a Close With A Great Event

10/15/26
Los Danzantes

Porterville College brought Hispanic Heritage Month to a vibrant close this week with an unforgettable afternoon of food, fellowship, and tradition. Students, staff, and faculty gathered outdoors under gorgeous springlike weather, filling the tables to enjoy each other's company and celebrate the rich tapestry of Hispanic culture.

The highlight of the event was a captivating performance by the new PC Folklorico Dance group, Los Danzantes. The troupe dazzled the audience with a unique dance featuring traditional masks, bringing movement and heritage to life right on campus. La Danza de los Viejitos, also known as the dance of the old men, is a traditional folk dance from Michoacán, Mexico. The dance is usually performed during religious holidays. It has existed since pre-Hispanic times (the historical period before the arrival of Spanish explorers) when it used to be a ritual to honor Xiuhtecuht. It is danced by men dressed in clothing representing the Purépecha people.

Before and after this amazing performance, attendees enjoyed traditional food and drinks, sparking warm conversations over shared cultural roots in the cool weather.

As a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), Porterville College takes immense pride in honoring and uplifting Hispanic culture. Events like this reflect our ongoing dedication to providing a welcoming, vibrant environment and supporting our students every step of the way.
